Integrating Soil Biodiversity into Ecosystem Services

SOB4ES Showcases Research at EGU2025 in Vienna

From 27 April to 2 May 2025, the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) was held at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV) in Vienna, Austria, and online.

The EGU General Assembly 2025 welcomed over 20,000 registered attendees from around the world. The meeting’s sessions covered a wide range of disciplines in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences.

SOB4ES consortium members took the opportunity to present project activities and recent achievements at the event:

  • Giles Ross, postdoctoral researcher at NIOO-KNAW, gave a presentation titled "Verifying Molecular Sequencing Data with Morphological Data in Soil Biota to Uncover Contributions to Ecosystem Functioning." He discussed the concept of linking taxa with ecosystem services using SOB4ES data as a training dataset.
  • Oren Shelef, representing the Agro-Diversity Lab of the Agricultural Research Organization (ARO) in Israel, presented a poster reporting on the sampling activities conducted by ARO as part of the SOB4ES project.
  • Julia Koeninger, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Vigo (the coordinating institution of SOB4ES), delivered a talk titled "Bridging Morphological and Molecular Approaches in Soil Fauna Diversity Assessments at the European Level." She highlighted the importance of methodological choices in interpreting soil biodiversity assessments and presented some preliminary results from the SOB4ES morphological macrofauna analysis.
